Welcome to my first post of a little series I am doing on staying fit while on the road!
Staying healthy on the road is hard but it is not impossible.
It is true that countless flight attendants gain weight because the exhaustion, lack of time to work out, hotel happy hours and lack of healthy food options but abundance of fast, cheap and easy food options on the road. HOWEVER, I have witnessed many also get way fitter and healthier living this lifestyle! Many have turned to fitness to deal with the stress of such a crazy schedule. I think others love that working out can be a constant in their life.
The majority of these posts in this little series is more fitness related. Today's will be on how to eat better while traveling!
FOCUS ON EATING FOR ENERGY//
Traveling is exhausting. It leaves many of us drained and reaching for whatever is easiest at mealtime. To feel more alive: eat living things. It really is that simple. What you eat can help you get over jetlag SO much faster if you eat clean and green.
{Mmmmmm raspberries.}
I stopped to pick these up and juice on a run to the beach in Manhattan Beach. Num
These amazing orange juice machines were all over Spain and they are starting to pop up around the states now too!
{Little fruit shop in Barcelona}
It is so easy to run into the markets in Europe which are all over the place and pick up fresh fruit daily!
LETS TALK SALADS //
{SUBWAY SALADS ARE THE SHIZNIT!}
With so many subways, it is hard to make excuses these days for not having enough money to eat healthy while traveling. Just make sure to get red wine vinegar, olive oil and oregano in place of dressing!
Many people may argue that when you travel is when you should be able to treat yourself. I belieive in treating yourself in MODERATION whenever you want, not just on special occasions like traveling. Plus, eating healthy doesn't have to be boring or restricting. This salad I got in Spain didn't make me feel like I was "missing out" while ordering at a nice restaurant. There are so many fun and fancy salad options these days!
Just choose the BEST option //
{CLIFF BARS! CLIFF BARS! CLIFF BARS!}
My boyfriend is the one who taught me this trick. When there is no other option but candy bars and you feel like you could die of hunger - you can always find a cliff bar! They are everywhere and they are the perfect option when nothing better (fruit or veggies) is available. This photo was taken at a trucker gas station stop in Wisconsin! They are literally everywhere and they are the most delicious/filling thing ever.
Stop at the grocery store before you leave//
If you have time before a trip, always try to make a quick run to the grocery store to stock up on healthy food for the airport/plane and hotel just in case there is no healthy options, you get in late or you're staying in the middle of nowhere! Ask ahead if a fridge will be in your hotel room. Some hotels will provide you a small fridge for a very small fee (or maybe even free!)
JUICE and eat as clean as possible before and after your trip//
{enjoying delish homemade juice with Monterey Maximilian at home}
Whenever I am at home, I go crazy with making my own juices. Juicing is my favorite way to bounce back if I over indulged while away. I also try to make some big salads and eat tons of fruit to get my energy back as soon as I can! Sometimes I will make extra juice the day before and freeze it in a mason jar with a little room for air on top so the jar doesn't explode and take it with me on the plane the next day!
Don't worry- I wasn't working this flight!
