What a crazy, whirlwind of a trip! Dave had a 35-hour layover in Philadephia and my brother was dying to use my buddy passes to go on another little trip. We decided to meet Dave in Philadephia for a quick trip since he was there for a work layover. Everything started off perfect. Even though it just happened to be the one day the pope was going to be in town, the flights were wide open and we were making awesome time en route to the Chicago airport from Wisconsin but then all this crazy stuff happened which made us late to the gate for our flight by just a few minutes.
There was only one last flight leaving that night on my airline and it happened to be to Baltimore. We ended up listing for the flight as the plane was boarding and making it on just in time. We got an amazing deal on a rental car (along with 2 upgrades and tons of fees waived!) we drove for an hour and 45 minutes to Dave's hotel in Philadephia and arrived around 4AM. Missing the direct flight to PHL actually allowed us to stay an extra day since we had to return the car to the Baltimore airport so we got to drive to Washington DC the next day which was awesome since I have never been there.
My brother has this really strange luck with flights. TERRIBLE things happen, but then things just play out into an even better situation than I could have ever imagined. On his flight home from Portland was canceled but then he got to stay in Portland 24 extra hours for free and flew home FIRST CLASS on a buddy pass on another airline!
My top 2 recommendations for PHL:
Weather permitting, use the bike share program INDEGO to explore the city : You can get all the info on how and where to rent the bikes on their site HERE.
Visit the Philadelphia Reading Terminal Market -This place is amazing!!! Huge indoor year long "market" with the types of quality, fresh, organic and local products you could expect from a farmers market. Definitely a must see in PHL! Visit the Reading Terminal Market website HERE.
