The next stop on our Pacific Coast Highway road trip was Huntington Beach. Huntington is a surf crazed seaside city in Orange County in Southern California. We found an Airstream Airbnb that was literally in someone's driveway and decided to post up there for 2 nights. Not gonna lie, we felt sorta like weirdos camping out in a driveway in a quiet residential area like that but it was a fun and unique experience that we probably will never do again! It was already dark when we arrived so we we headed to a nearby Whole Foods after unpacking for a salad and to grab some breakfast items before passing out!
Once we made it out the door and headed down to the beach we were shocked by how overcast the ocean was. The morning started off so hazy that you couldn't even see the ocean from the beach! We walked down the long Huntington pier and ordered a small fries to share at Ruby's Diner at the end. As we were at Ruby's, the haze lifted and it turned into another perfect and sunny southern California day.
I have so many fond memories from this day. Watching the surfers from above out on the pier, walking around the beach and checking out some of the shops. Even after the haze cleared up I decided to not rent a board to break in my new wet suit as I had originally planned because the surfers in Huntington were just too good and the waves too massive for me. Basically I chickened out but also did all those hardcore surfers a favor by staying out of their way. Huntington is certainly not the place for beginner surfers like myself. For lunch, we went to a cool grocery store that had lots of local produce to pick up some things to make the best salad we could back at the Airstream. It was a bit challenging because the Airstream didn't have running water inside it but I am pretty sure we made the best salad either of us had ever had. It was amazing!
Later at night after relaxing the rest of the afternoon and watching Anthony Bourdain, we had a glass of wine at Sunset Beach in the darkness while listening to some good music (shoutout to Claire Michele's soundcloud!) This is a really nice memory for me. There is just something about those expansive Cali beaches that I love so much. The beaches in California are unlike anywhere else I have been in the world.
We watched some more Anthony Bourdain and went to bed early in the adorable, comfy Airstream parked in a stranger's driveway.
After my morning ritual of reading with coffee, yoga and meditation that I've been following religiously the past month or so, Dave and I headed to the Huntington Beach park for a work out followed by a delicious brunch. We went across the street from the park to the "Park Bench Cafe." YUM. I definitely recommend the veggie omelet! Such a cool place to sit outside at in a total park atmosphere with many great breakfast options.
We had such a cool experience in Huntington and it was nice to stay in the same spot for longer then one night. It really helped us get enough rest to power thru the non-stop travel that this road trip entailed.
Next stop, Santa Barbara!
